Otivar and Surroundings

Otivar is a traditional Andalucian white-washed mountain village set deep within the Sierra de la Almijara, where the primary occupation of the inhabitants is fruit farming. This is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in unspoilt Spain and experience life within a beautiful village full of life and history.  Travelling along the coast East of Malaga, the village is situated 20 minutes north Almunecar.  The local beaches are to be found in Almunecar, La Herradura, Nerja and Salobrena, all easily reached within half an hour from Otivar. 

Sightseeing

Further north from Otivar is the historic town of Granada and the Alhambra Palace. Half an hour further north from Granada will take you to the Sierra Nevada which hosts Spain's most southerly skiing resort coupled with breathtaking views of the mountains and the Mediterranean coastline.  

Malaga is currently the most popular airport for Otivar, but some airlines are now using the newly designated International airport of Granada. Either of these destinations will take up to one and half hours to reach Otivar.  Further east is Almeria airport and that will take approximately two hours travelling to Otivar. 

Sports and Other Activities

There are many sports and leisure activities in this area of Spain, paragliding, hangliding and hill walking are very popular attractions. In surrounding towns and villages, rock-climbing, cycling and horse riding is possible. Waterfalls and fresh water lagoons run into the river Verde and these are very popular with tourists seeking the exhilaration and liberating experience of swimming in natural water.  The Costa Tropical has its share of good golf courses, if you have a more relaxing pursuit in mind.  This southern area of Spain also has an abundance of beautiful birds for bird watching enthusiasts.

The local beaches around Otivar are perfect for water sports, including sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling and the marine life is wonderful.  There is something for everyone in and around Otivar -  relax and watch the local people transport their produce via donkeys in and out of the village or fill up each day with a new experience.

Car hire (or use of car) is essential.

Climate

Almunecar's mild winters and long hot summers mean there's a lively seafront scene throughout the year. In the winter months you can sunbathe here in the morning and be ski-ing on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada in the afternoon. The average winter temperature is 18C and in summer it's about 25C (although the midday maximum can rise to well over 30C in August).
